The First YearYou will begin your MBA program with core courses that build the foundation of your degree. These classes teach the fundamental concepts needed to deepen your knowledge in functional areas of business. You can choose one elective during your first year and begin tailoring your experience to your specific career goals.The MBA Career Center plays an important role during your first year of the program – fostering the development of lifelong career management skills. The Center facilitates a carefully designed workshop series that will help you develop your career strategy and a marketing plan for your job search. Workshop topics include career- and self-assessment, market appraisal, resume and cover letter writing, networking, interviewing, and job-offer evaluation. And you will discover that the three themes of our program – strategic innovation, information technology, and analytic decision-making – are interwoven through elective courses for the duration of your experience. During the spring of your second year, you can enroll in our newly launched “futures” course. Students will enjoy expert presentations on “future-driven” trends and executive presentations that interpret and discuss the business implications of these trends. Course projects will give students hands-on experience with trend analysis and teach them forward-thinking strategy skills.As an extension of course topics and global trend analysis, Merage offers opportunities to gain first-hand knowledge of the cultures and management practices in other industrialized countries. In your second year, you can participate in the quarter-long International Exchange Program at partner schools in Asia, Europe, and Latin America. You can also study abroad during the week-long International Study Trip.Sophisticated learning tools at the UC Irvine Paul Merage School of Business include some of the most technologically sophisticated classroom and research facilities in the country. The school pioneered the use of networked laptops inOur Web-based intranet site, called Catalyst, uses state-of-the-art technology to maximize the flow of information between instructors and students. Catalyst is so progressive that it was named one of the top 50 intranet sites in the nation by CIO magazine.Admissions process Each year, we have the privilege and responsibility of reviewing hundreds of applications for admission. Because of our relatively small, team-based program, we consider candidates as individuals—both in and out of the classroom. We welcome applicants from a wide variety of undergraduate disciplines, and every student’s learning experience is enhanced by the diversity of educational backgrounds in the classroom.We evaluate each candidate’s quantitative and qualitative abilities as we seek individuals whose goals and aspirations are aligned with what the Merage MBA offers.
