TGK - The Darden MBA Program

The Darden MBA Program

The Darden mission, to produce leaders in the world of practical affairs, involves far more than a collection of courses spread across 21 months. The program leading to the Darden MBA is a rigorous experience, a proving ground for only the most dedicated students pursuing careers in general management. Graduates of the Darden Experience often recall their time in the program as the hardest two years they ever loved.Built around the Case Method of instruction, the Darden Experience involves daily, discussion-based learning in which students are active collaborators in their business education. The program also involves a firm grounding in principled behavior. Long before the rise of corporate scandals, the Darden School taught the inextricable link between business and ethics. Here, students take on the challenge of integrating ethical thinking into critical business decision-making.From this site, you can access extensive information about the unique Darden community. Darden offers programs and research that develop leaders who are skilled at turning ideas into action. Darden MBAs learn to think, decide, act — and lead others. Our graduates lead organizations in a myriad of industries, markets, countries, and cultures. To prepare students for the challenges of business leadership, Darden takes a unique approach to management education, based on a distinctive set of core values. The Darden program is an experience, not just a collection of courses. From the first day you will discover a distinct difference in how and what you learn. The "how" is the case method and the accompanying dynamic classroom environment. The case method requires you to think, decide and act. You get to test your ideas and actions in an environment that fosters healthy exchange and debate. Every class demands that you be actively engaged in the learning process. To be engaged requires that you come to class prepared to excel everyday. Aristotle offered this view on excellence: "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act but a habit."At Darden you develop the habits that form the basis of success. The "what" also reflects the Darden difference. Our approach builds functional expertise with an enterprise perspective. You learn the theory and techniques underpinning functional skills, but more than that, you will see all of this come together in a real business setting. It is not just about calculating a net present value or an economic-order quantity, but an understanding of how these things are implemented in a decision-making environment.Good decisions are the result of an understanding of the total enterprise and, like anything else, our skills improve by doing. Beyond just "the how" and "the what" there are other dimensions that define the unique Darden experience: Our approach to teamwork, our devotion to honor and integrity, a committed faculty, a global view, and a spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship.Darden Core ValuesDarden’s approach to education reflects foundational values established 50 years ago. Our core values continue to guide the school. The Darden MBA program develops decisive, action-oriented, analytical leaders through a continuing commitment to:Discussion-based pedagogy in which students and faculty share the responsibility for learning Energy, hard work and a passion for excellence Collaboration and a climate of trust supported by honor and Integrity Deep connections to business Global diversityCriteria for AdmissionApplication RequirementsInformation for International ApplicantsApplication EssaysThe Darden Admissions Committee evaluates three broad areas in considering candidates for admission:AcademicsThe Committee looks for evidence of superior academic performance and intellectual ability, and for non-native English speakers, evidence of proficient English skills for success in the program. While no specific undergraduate major is required for admission, coursework in accounting and statistics is highly recommended prior to matriculation.
