Graduate Programs at University of Delaware

Below is the update on graduate programs in Finance field at University of Delaware that I think it's still a good course to take though the US just encountered the subprime crisis adversely affecting this field to some extent. I retrieved the information from the university.

Graduate Programs Related to Finance

MBA Program

At the graduate level, the MBA degree offers its students an option to concentrate in Finance. A concentration in Finance is desirable for individuals seeking a career in corporate finance, portfolio management, investment banking, consumer banking, international finance, and/or financial consulting.

To concentrate in Finance through the MBA, one is required to take four finance classes beyond the core course in managerial finance, FINC 850.
FINC 851 - Corporate Financial Analysis (an emphasis on financial policy)
FINC 852 - Investment Analysis and Portfolio Management (an emphasis on portfolio strategy)FINC 853 - International Finance (an emphasis on currency influences in investments and corporate finance)
FINC 854 - Special Topics in Finance
FINC 855 - Financial Institutions and Markets (an emphasis on fixed income markets)
FINC 856 - Financial Engineering & Risk Management (an emphasis on futures and options)FINC 858 - Corporate Governance (an emphasis on seminar discussion of the relationships between managers and owners)
FINC 859 - Seminar in Finance (an emphasis on a project of strong interest to you)
FINC 867 - This course number designates an 'experimental course,' meaning a course that is a new idea. The name and nature of such courses changes over time. Currently, under this number:

For Fall 2007, we have: Small Firm Finance & Banking, which explores similarities and differences between large and small companies, the challenges facing management with emphasis on financing. Topics include organization forms, business life cycle, risks and issues of entrepreneurship, sources of funding working capital and generational concerns. Course utilizes lectures, case studies and group interaction. Prerequisite: FINC 850. 3 credits. We also have for fall: Private Equity & Venture Financing, which investigates the legal, accounting, and financial issues surrounding the establishment and funding of a new or existing business using private equity. Emphasis is placed on equity transactions and private placements. Prerequisite: ACCT 800 or equivalent. 3 credits. This course is cross-listed with ACCT 867.

For Spring 2008, we have a Ph.D. elective: Workshop in Financial Economics. This is appropriate for Economics Ph.D and M.S. students, and perhaps others, with appropriate preparation. Contact the Department for more information.Click here to view the corresponding syllabi for these courses.MBA students also need to take 6 credits of other MBA electives not offered by the Finance Department. The electives should be selected to enhance the student's understanding of other topics related to their career objective.Visit the MBA Program site to find out more about MBA admissions, financial aid, student fellowships, and the Corporate Associates Program. To find out about MBA placement, contact Mr. Robert Barker, Graduate and Executive Programs Office, at 302-831-8912.Ph. D. Why the Warwick Business School?

Professional and personal developmentOur outstanding research leadership coupled with our extensive corporate relationships and practitioner links enable the creation of unique research-to-practice links. Using corporate input, we take a personal development approach in our curriculum to meet the needs of employers looking for quality. The Warwick experienceWe create a welcoming environment that supports you, teaches you, and works alongside you, helping you achieve your goals. Studying with WBS is inspiring in many ways: a vibrant community and a heady mix of intellectual possibilities to explore in person or at a distance. These are some of the elements that make the Warwick experience unique. Stimulating studyYour peers will be a diverse range of participants from around the world. Our teaching faculty is highly international, and the focus within the classroom is on global and international management. We have comparatively small intakes which results in greater collaboration and an emphasis on teamwork and shared experience. Great career prospectsWe measure our success by the success of our graduates and we work hard to help them achieve their goals. Our graduates are highly attractive to businesses all over the world because they not only have the knowledge but they truly understand how to apply it. Not all our graduates want promotion, or more money. Some want the skills and the confidence to start their own business, or to switch direction entirely. Some want to get out of their niche and into general management. Whatever your definition of success, we can help you achieve it.Our reputation goes with youWBS performs consistently well across a range of global rankings. We are regarded by academics, employers, and external surveys as one of the top MBA programmes in the UK. An MBA from us means business. Networking opportunitiesYour fellow participants on the programme will be a valuable source of information and enthusiasm. Our participants have worked for an average of 10 years in senior management, and sharing personal experiences is crucial to grounding the programme in the realities of the workplace. Our alumni are some of our enthusiastic supporters. Through your peers, and our alumni community, you will have access to unrivalled networking and learning opportunities during and after your studies with us.The skills I built during The Warwick MBA have been just as valuable as the thorough grounding in theories and management tools. Working in small, close-knit teams, trying to draw the best from each other's skills and experiences to address a business problem, was invaluable preparation for our way of working at McKinsey.Jeremy Clarke MBA (Warwick), Associate, McKinsey & CoVery few schools can match the flexibility of our programme. Choose a mode for your seven core modules, mix and match for your six electives, and complete a management consultancy project. However hard it gets, and it will, we will be there to support you every step of the way. Study with us, and we know you can achieve great things.Full-time: An accelerated 12 month MBA, with a highly international and experienced class.Executive: Studied part-time over three years, delivered in week-long (Monday to Friday) residential modules. Allows you to plan in advance and minimise disruption to professional and personal responsibilities.Distance learning: Gives you maximum flexibility. Allows you to study from anywhere in the world. Ideal if you travel regularly, or professional or personal commitments make it difficult to attend regular classes.Whichever way you learn, there's a common curriculum and project to conclude. The biggest surprise for me has been the levels of newly-found confidence that the Warwick MBA has given me. I feel revived and ready to take on all sorts of new challenges, both professionally and personally. It is a very powerful feeling.Rachel Cooper MBA (Warwick), Lecturer in Business Studies & Accounting, Worcester College of TechnologyWBS is a great place to study. There are many reasons you might choose to study for the Warwick MBA, but undoubtedly our fantastic campus and thriving social scene will play a part in helping you decide to come here.WBS is set in the beautifully landscaped campus of the University of Warwick. All participants spend some time here, with syndicate group work helping people mix and integrate. It's a great place to come and get away from the rat race. The green spaces make for a relaxing environment while our proximity to Coventry, Birmingham, Stratford, and Warwick gives you access to contemporary urban life. We're only an hour away from London, but the atmosphere couldn't be more different. One of the huge benefits of coming to WBS is that it's not in London, and therefore your living costs are considerably lower. In 2005 the Mercer HR Cost of Living Survey found Warwick to be around 30 per cent cheaper than the capital. Our accommodation is top quality, whether you're here full-time or just overnight. Living here, you won't feel like you're surrounded by buildings, and there's plenty to do when you're not studying.Thinking of bringing your family with you while you study here? It's a lovely place to live.

TRTS - Entrepreneurship Programs at Wharton School

Wharton’s spirit is entrepreneurial at all levels – active, innovative, and risk-taking. And our depth of resources gives you the means to translate your ideas into action. You might start your own business – or help members of the community launch businesses through the active Small Business Development Center. Or you might consult with an on-campus entrepreneur in our distinctive Entrepreneur-in-Residence program, sponsored by Wharton Entrepreneurial Programs (WEP), the center for entrepreneurial activity at Wharton.Wharton and Penn both provide resources to develop entrepreneurial skills and start entrepreneurial ventures. Tapping into these opportunities, students develop an adaptive, risk-tolerant management style that they can bring to jobs in consulting, high-growth companies, and other worldwide industries.Entrepreneurial Resources:Wharton Entrepreneurial Programs The Annual Wharton Business Plan Competition Wharton Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Venture Initiation Program Entrepreneur-in-Residence Program The Center for Technology Transfer (CTT)--------------------------------------------------------------------------------Wharton Entrepreneurial ProgramsThe driving force behind the entrepreneurial resources at Wharton is one of the most influential centers of entrepreneurship in the world, the Wharton Entrepreneurial Programs (WEP). More than 20 professors and practitioners bring cutting-edge research and years of successful entrepreneurial experience, both sharing that knowledge in class and helping to guide entrepreneurial initiatives. For more about WEP, including interviews with alumni entrepreneurs, see the online newsletter, Get It Started. The Annual Business Plan CompetitionThis well-established competition provides more than $40,000 in cash prizes to student teams with ideas for new ventures. In addition to valuable advice and support from more than 200 venture capitalists, students learn from entrepreneurs and other professionals who serve as judges and mentors. Finalists present their business ideas to a panel of distinguished judges in an event that brings students together with angel investors, venture capitalists, Wharton alumni, entrepreneurs, and others from the entrepreneurial business community.Small Business Development Center (SBDC)The SBDC offers consulting services to Philadelphia-area entrepreneurs and small business owners. MBA students are employed by the SBDC as senior consultants (full-time in the summer and part-time during the academic year). Students help entrepreneurs craft business plans, manage expansion strategies, and raise capital.Venture Initiation ProgramThe Venture Initiation Program (VIP) provides MBA students with the entrepreneurial management education, support, and facilities essential to start successful new businesses. While course work can lay a solid foundation for entrepreneurial activities, students may need more help to turn their ideas into successful businesses. VIP — created by Wharton Entrepreneurial Programs and the Wharton Small Business Development Center — walks students through the steps of kicking off their enterprise and approaching capital markets.Entrepreneur-in-Residence ProgramThis program gives students the opportunity to meet one-on-one with successful entrepreneurs. Students sign up to meet with a Wharton Entrepreneur-in-Residence (EIR) to talk over ideas and strategies for a successful entrepreneurial venture or simply life as an independent business person. A different EIR holds office hours on campus each week during the academic year. Recent EIRs have included founders, presidents, and CEOs of Amden, Bayada Nurses, BizRate, Boston Scientific, CDNow, Digene, Half.com, Hasbro, J.D. Power & Associates, Medsite, Metropolitan Bakery, Optiant, Shopzilla, TargetCast, Texas Monthly, and Travelocity.READ ABOUT WHARTON'S ALUMNI ENTREPRENEURSThe Center for Technology Transfer (CTT)This University of Pennsylvania center gives MBA and other students the opportunity to help launch startup companies by turning new ideas from Penn research into business ventures. More than 50 ventures have been designed to commercialize biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and software — even create a set of innovative horseshoes developed by veterinary faculty. The CTT allows students to work with entrepreneurs, individual investors, venture capitalists, and faculty to develop, advise, and sometimes lead these new firms.source: http://www.wharton.upenn.edu/mba/leadership/entrepreneurship/index.cfm

TBSL - PhD Programs at the Drucker School, Claremont University

The Ph.D. in Management program is designed to allow advanced students to participate in an ongoing program of knowledge creation at the Drucker School. The program is intensive, with high expectations for publication and scholarly contribution. The objective is “to create and disseminate knowledge relevant to critical issues affecting management practice worldwide.”Except in rare cases, applications are not accepted for the Ph.D. in Management program until after a student has completed appropriate graduate coursework at CGU. Those interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in Management degree at the Drucker School who do not hold an MBA should first apply to the MBA program or one of the school’s Executive Management programs and successfully complete at least one year of coursework. Individuals who already hold an MBA or Executive Management degree from another institution are strongly encouraged to earn an Executive Management Certificate at the Drucker School.Admission is highly competitive. Only a few students are accepted each year. To be admitted, an applicant must secure a sponsor from our core faculty and present a detailed Plan of Study developed with the sponsoring faculty member. Applicants must have extensive familiarity with research in progress at the Drucker School. Those who have not completed Claremont Graduate University's master's or executive management program are therefore less likely to be admitted.Recent (within five years of application) GMAT scores of 600 or higher and consistently high grade point averages in prior academic work are minimum requirements. The Ph.D. in Management program requires completion of 72 semester units of coursework, including 24 semester units of management courses, a minimum of 12 hours of research methodology at the doctoral level, and a maximum of 12 hours of independent study with the sponsoring faculty member. After completing at least 32 units, but not more than 48 units, a major paper of publishable quality, equivalent to a Master’s thesis and demonstrating breadth in the chosen research area, is required. The sponsor and two additional faculty members administer an open oral examination. Upon successful completion of these requirements and all remaining coursework, a second paper, which serves as the dissertation proposal, is required. The student’s doctoral committee, consisting of the faculty sponsor and two other eligible members of the faculty, administer a second, open oral examination. Successful students are then “advanced to candidacy.” To complete the Ph.D. program, the student must submit and successfully defend the dissertation within seven years from the date of admission to the program. For additional information regarding University Ph.D. requirements see the Admissions website.Recommended reading for prospective Ph.D. students is Rhythms of Academic Life, Peter Frost and M. Susan Taylor, Sage Publications, 1996, available through Amazon.com.PhD in Financial EngineeringOverview Financial derivatives are continuing to play increasingly important roles in modern finance, not only with regard to the management of global investment and corporate risk, but also as a means for designing better personal investment and estate planning portfolios. Necessarily, this makes the design of such products more difficult, placing in higher demand experts trained in the advanced mathematics and investment techniques of modern finance.A Master of Science in Financial Engineering (MSFE) or comparable degree provides only part of the training such experts will need as they work to analyze, price, and invent the innovative products that modern personal, corporate, and global finance will demand. This training, which can lead to the creation of new knowledge in the field, is appropriately achieved through the depth and breadth of study undertaken in the pursuit of a Ph.D.RequirementsAll Financial Engineering Ph.D. students are required to first complete the 48 unit MSFE program at CGU with at least a 3.0 GPA, take 2 advanced (300 level) mathematics courses as part of their MSFE electives, and pass two written preliminary examinations: one in the mathematics of finance, based on the 4 MSFE core courses in mathematics, and one in advanced finance, based on the 4 MSFE core courses in finance. Upon successfully completing these examinations, students are required to take an additional 24 units of advanced course work, independent study, and directed research in mathematics and finance. During completion of the final 24 units, students are required to pass their last two preliminary examinations: one based on their advanced course work in mathematics, and one based on their advanced course work in finance.Upon completion of the last two written preliminary examinations and the 72 total units, students select a qualifying committee of 4 professors consisting of at least one faculty member representing the School of Mathematical Sciences and at least one representing Finance at the Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management. The oral qualifying examination is administered by the qualifying committee to examine the student's preparation for research in his or her chosen area of Financial Engineering. Upon Successful completion of the oral qualifying examination, the student is advanced to the candidacy for the Ph.D. At this time, the student chooses a dissertation committee of 4 professors, which much be co-chaired by a School of Mathematical Sciences faculty member and a Peter F. Drucker and Masatoshi Ito Graduate School of Management faculty member in Finance. The completed Ph.D. dissertation, based on the research outlined in the oral qualifying examination, is defended before the dissertation committee.AdmissionApplications are not accepted for the Ph.D. in Financial Engineering. Those interested in the degree must first apply for admission to the MSFE program. Upon completion of 32 units of coursework toward the MSFE, students may apply for admission to the Ph.D. Admission is not guaranteed, and is based on a student's entire record.source: http://www.cgu.edu/pages/1886.asp]

T3 - PhD in Marketing at Duke University

Well this is another cool program from Duke University. Let's see what they can do for us!!

Overview of the Ph.D. Program

Marketing is the process whereby demands for products, services and ideas are anticipated, managed and satisfied. This broad area of study has generated research at three levels. The first, or macro level, examines factors affecting the structure and efficiency of markets and the profitability of firms within markets. Often such explorations use economic theory. One example is the study of the effect of product differentiation on the optimal channel structure and profitability for the firms within an industry. A second level of research is at the managerial level. The emphasis at this level is on improving the decision making abilities of managers. The methodology used is very diverse. It includes compiling descriptive information on how managers now go about making decisions, developing heuristics to augment current practices and building normative models of how managers should make decisions. Work at this level can be useful to both the public and business sectors. For example, one can develop new methods for testing advertising copy, examine the effects on purchase behavior of providing nutritional information in a grocery store or build an expert system which makes an individual manager's expertise available throughout the firm. The third, or micro, level is concerned with understanding the factors that influence buyer behavior. Often the theoretical base for these studies is psychological. Examples of studies at this level are determining the differential effect of a verbal or pictorial advertising message on the consumer's brand preferences, testing the effects of Internet search agents on consumer choice, or examining emotionally difficult consumer choices.

The Ph.D. Program in Marketing at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business is designed to provide students with the training necessary for a successful research and teaching career in any of the above areas. This training is done by having students take courses selected to meet their individual needs and interests, work with faculty members on joint research, conduct a series of original research projects which ultimately lead to a dissertation, and assist in the teaching of marketing courses. The Ph.D. program in marketing has an outstanding global reputation for placing students in preeminent business schools. Faculty invest heavily in training and working one-on-one with doctoral students to teach them how to think about and do path-breaking research.RequirementsThe marketing Ph.D. student's course work at Fuqua is individually designed to provide both breadth and depth in specific areas of marketing, such as consumer behavior, marketing models, marketing strategy and planning and marketing measurement and analysis. Progress toward the degree involves successfully completing coursework, first- and second-year research papers, a comprehensive exam (which normally is taken at the start of the sixth semester) and the dissertation. In addition, students participate in research seminars and assist the faculty in research and teaching activities.Students are encouraged to work with individual faculty members on original research projects. Often this work leads to publications authored jointly with faculty. Such an approach gives the student a good start toward a career in research and provides the guidance necessary to allow Ph.D. candidates to conduct successfully his or her own research. These research activities start during the first year in the program and culminate with the thesis. Total time in the program is scheduled for five years, although this timetable is a function of the individual's progress once admitted. Normally students are given tuition grants while enrolled in the program plus research assistantships and stipends for five years. The marketing faculty's experience in training Ph.D.'s has indicated that it is not necessary for the student to have had much coursework in business administration or marketing prior to entering the program. Instead, we find courses in related disciplines such as economics, mathematics, statistics or psychology provide the student with the background necessary for integrating and understanding the concepts taught in our program. Admission depends on the student's GMAT or GRE scores, recommendations from faculty, grades and other factors such as work and research experience.Job OpportunitiesOur marketing faculty has close contacts with all of the leading business schools and is willing to work with students to place them in positions consistent with their personal professional goals. Our graduates have been employed at Stanford University, MIT, the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern University, the University of Arizona, Carnegie Mellon University, INSEAD, the University of North Carolina, the University of Michigan, and the University of Wisconsin, among others. The Marketing FacultyThe faculty has training and abilities in a broad range of subject areas, such as economic analyses, cognitive and social psychology, strategy, statistics and decision making. This knowledge base has led the faculty into a series of different research areas, including the measurement of consumer beliefs, attitudes and values; the study of both the consumer and managerial decision making process; the creation and use of analytic tools to guide marketing strategy for the allocation of marketing resources (e.g., promotion, distribution, pricing) within the firm and economic analyses of marketing issues.

T1 - The Duke MBA, Fuqua School of Business, Duke University

The Duke MBA is regarded as one of the best business programs in the US. Let's see why they are different from others.

Overview

As you’re comparing curriculums at business schools around the world, one of the first differences you’ll notice about the Duke MBA is the breadth and depth of our content and the strength of our faculty. Ranked among the top ten business schools in the country in every single functional area rated by BusinessWeek magazine in 2004, Duke offers students excellent education in all aspects of business practice. This breadth, built on our world-class multi-disciplinary faculty, offers you what we call our Research Advantage — an unparalleled ability to help you go beyond the “basics” and bring the insights of cutting-edge research in all subject areas of relevance to your career.

And with our global focus and the opportunity to concentrate on an area of particular interest within a general management framework, the Duke MBA provides outstanding preparation for a career in today’s complex, multicultural, and multinational business environment.

As a Duke MBA student, you will start the process of developing collaborative leadership and organizational management skills along with a global outlook the moment you step into our program, during the first term “Global Institute”.You will then dive into a rigorous exploration of the major functional areas in business, gaining a firm foundation in economics, quantitative analysis and statistics, accounting, finance, marketing, strategy, and operations management, while reinforcing your functional skills with additional management communications education.

As you continue in the program, you have the choice of undertaking a wide-ranging general management education designed to suit your individual goals, or of focusing more directly on particular career paths through a variety of inter-disciplinary concentration and certificate opportunities.

FORMAT:Flexible and Focused Duke MBA courses are taught in six-week terms. This arrangement allows you to take more courses (three or four per term) with the same number of faculty contact hours as in a more traditional system—giving you greater breadth of knowledge without sacrificing depth. Thanks to this term schedule, you will have taken at least five elective courses by the end of your first year—more if you exempt core courses or elect to take the FleX Term, a two-week winter term with key career electives that help you prepare for summer internship opportunities. This structure gives you the opportunity to explore a particular area in more depth, which provides a competitive edge as well as additional knowledge to draw upon as you consider, interview for, and then begin your summer internship. This flexibility continues through your second year, when you can select from a broad menu of elective courses as you move toward job interviews and career choices. This flexible, yet focused, format with a rich array of courses that are informed by the latest research and business trends offers you the opportunity to gain both the depth needed for early career success and the breadth needed for lifelong success.CONTENT:Global Knowledge At Duke, your intellectual range knows no boundaries. The Duke MBA program begins with a three-week-long Global Institute held in August. The newly implemented institute features two core courses—Leadership, Ethics, and Organization and Global Institutions and Environment. The Global Institute begins the process of helping you become a collaborative leader with a deep understanding of the multifaceted global business environment. With an internationally experienced faculty, a curriculum informed by global business trends, a cosmopolitan student body, and partnerships with leading corporations and public organizations worldwide, your Duke MBA will help you graduate with an international perspective on business that gives you a competitive edge in today’s global economy. You will also have multiple opportunities to experience business and cultural practices in other countries firsthand through our extensive array of Global Academic Travel Experience (GATE) courses and exchange programs – indeed, most of our students chose to take advantage of these programs. For more information regarding international coursework and learning opportunities, please visit the International Center

CONCENTRATIONS:Inter-disciplinary Depth The Duke MBA offers optional specialized Concentrations in all of the major functional areas (such as accounting, decision sciences, finance, management, marketing, operations, and strategic consulting) and in topical areas (such as entrepreneurship, international business, leadership and ethics, and social entrepreneurship). Each concentration identifies a set of electives from which you will choose six courses.Duke MBA concentrations have a common “4-2” structure, where the concentration typically has four courses in a focal area (e.g., Finance) and two courses from other areas that provide supporting breadth for the focal concentration. This structure of thoughtful, supporting breadth for the focal concentration is absolutely unique among leading business schools – this interdisciplinary feature connects directly to Duke’s tradition of providing a general management education and our reputation for innovation through collaboration. As organizations work toward improved coordination of organizational activities, so, too, your education should reflect how functional activities and skills can be enriched and strengthened by other perspectives.Concentrations are not required. You may choose none, one, or a maximum of two concentrations. If you choose two concentrations, think of the first concentration providing depth needed for early career success and the second concentration providing breadth needed for lifelong career success. Note that even if you choose two concentrations, you still have room in your schedule for additional electives to customize your MBA experience for either greater depth or breadth, as needed.Information regarding concentration offerings can be found here.No matter your career path, your grounding in the principles and practices of general management coupled with opportunities to specialize in a particular set of skills means that your Duke MBA provides a strategic, global perspective that will serve you well throughout their careers.

CERTIFICATES OF EXCELLENCE:Specialized Depth and Breadth Along with Concentrations, the Duke MBA offers several intense Certificate of Excellence programs. Certificates of Excellence serve as a complement to Concentrations, allowing you to distinguish yourself with greater depth of course work in a given area. We are introducing new Certificate of Excellence programs in Finance and Marketing that will likely have depth of six to eight courses in addition to the two distribution requirements as in Concentrations, together with demonstration of above-average academic excellence in the chosen area. As a companion to Concentrations, Certificates of Excellence allow you to send a strong signal about your depth, and the quality of your depth, in a single area. At the same time, if you choose this path you are required to take two additional courses, in total, to ensure that depth does not come at the expense of breadth of general management skills and perspectives necessary for lifelong career success.

HEALTH SECTOR MANAGEMENT:A Certificate Program for Fast Track Careers If you aspire to a business career in the health care industry—whether in pharmaceutical leadership, biotechnology business development, hospital administration, health sector consulting, health sector investment, or other segments of the industry —Duke offers one of the most respected education programs in the world. The HSM program adds a specialized understanding of the unique facets of the health care industry to the general management skills you will acquire in during your core program, teaching you skills you will need to steer your business through the complex issues surrounding health care.
